Follow through; 1, 2, 3, 4 seconds or longer?

Post by Bret P »

Hi all,

Slowly improving my pistol shooting. I've heard follow through is very important. I heard a member from a European team say, "it's all dry fire and follow through". So for the top shooters out there, how long is your follow through?
I am trying to length my follow through to about 4 seconds as will help me with the correct holding position. I do tend to drift around a little.
Thank you all in advance for your advice.
Regards
Bret

Too long, follow through long enough to see your foresight recover from recoil, see where it settles on the target and to call your shot position /value.
Then check your screen or scope to see if your shot call is correct.
Should be 1-2 seconds at the most.

As long as you hold for a second or so, the pellet/bullet has time to get out of the barrel without any added disturbance. What I coach is to re-align the sights as if you were going to take a second shot, and then bring the pistol down.

This is not super critical for air pistol, but if you ever plan on shooting a sequence of shots with a firearm, practicing good recovery technique is essential. Students who get in the habit of relaxing immediately after an air pistol shot have to un-learn that when they move on to shooting Standard Pistol, and that can take a lot of work.
